Why does everyone care so much about the Virginia Tech shootings?

Question by magnificentbumba: Why does everyone care so much about the Virginia Tech shootings?
Why are people so upset about the Virginia tech killings but aren’t even phased by the carnage currently happening in the Middle East? Why should I treat the 30 students any differently than the 180+ that died today from terrorist bombings in Baghdad? Why should I treat them any differently than the hundreds of US soldiers dying every year in combat? Or what about the 20 Iraqi police officers that were just executed and beheaded on film? Yeah, that’s right, I shouldn’t treat them any differently, and that’s why I feel much different after the rampage at Virginia Tech.
I’m actually kind of glad this happened. Maybe this will wake our stupid country up and we’ll stop blaming the movies, stop blaming rap music, stop blaming violent video games, and START blaming the sophisticated & deadly weaponry that is so easily accessible. Forget gun control, it needs to be ILLEGAL to own anything but hunting rifles.
Did you know U.S. corporations produce over 250,000 9mm pistols per year? Not only was a 9mm used at VTech, but the 9mm is a favorite amongst inner-city gangs and thugs. So much of a favorite that you can hear 50cent sing about them in his rap songs! So many weapons are produced in this country that, if you can’t get one legally (which you probably pretty easily), you DEFINITELY can get one on the black market for not much more. This problem can be obviously remedied by cutting off the supply and making guns ILLEGAL once and for all! Please, lets make our streets a LOT safer and make guns illegal!

Both groups should be addressed. I believe it is again the way the media addressed both issues. Sad situations.

Have a heart…….these students were our future.

blame it on rap music why don’t you. jeez **** like this happens and rap gets blamed. you are stereotyping pig. i hope you burn in hell for saying that you are glad it happened.

This is AMERICA not Baghdad. Things like this aren’t supposed to happen here. Why you ask? They just aren’t. Deal with it!

Something tragic such as this doesn’t happen very often on U.S. soil. As a follower of this story, I view it as fresh and very interesting to follow. As I recall, when the U.S. first invaded Iraq, media coverage of the events occuring over there was everyday.

As an Asian-American, I am deeply saddened by the loss of 32 innocent lives. Cho was obviously a very troubled individual with a secretive intent to kill those people that he despised.

Most people on this earth that have a heart and are human care a great deal about all of the terrible and horrible things that are going on in the world.

The other occurrences are only treated differently because they are more removed from us and our country, and human being feels more deeply for protecting their actual home that is just human nature.

When a person is as psychologically and mentally disturbed as the killer was, it would not matter what gun controls were in place. People who want to commit mass murder and mayhem will always find a way.

There are ways to “build” a homemade handgun and I know this as I have family members in law enforcement who have confiscated plans and weapons made from these plans in drug and weaponry raids.

You should be ashamed of yourself saying that you are “actually kind of glad that this happened.” That shows a great deal of meanness and coldheartedness on your part.

If there were only hunting guns available, the killer would have used a hunting gun in order to kill the people that he thought were against him, or unfairly rich or whatever the cause supposedly was.

People have gone on rampages and killed others with kitchen knives and household scissors and fireplace tools and cars, should all those things be governed and outlawed too???? I know a woman who is wheelchair bound for life by receiving multiple facial blows from her abusive husbands fists. What needs to be outlawed there? The abuse or the fists????

The laws need to be changed concerning people who are exhibiting anti-social and frightening behavior. This young man had written many unique and threatening things in the past, and had been reported and sent for counseling but nothing else was done. The college was not even allowed to notify his parents about what was going on.

Yes, the United States produces many guns, but the majority of them do not end up in the hands of mentally unbalanced and disgruntled people who are going to go on a rampage and kill innocent people.

Please lets make our streets safer by teaching everyone from a young age, that all human life is valuable and we need to work together to make the world a better place.

yes, acually i do agree with you. but i am surely not glad this happened. there was a special on tv the other day talking about how so many people die each day over in Iraq. but the government doesnt even report it. yes they tell us how many people have died but do they tell us the injured? the ones with brain damage? NO. they tell us only the deaths when soooo many others are in hospitals and there families are suffering. i certainly pray for those who lost there lives at virgina tech. that was very tragic and it shouldnt have happened. guns do need to be illegal. hope you share my thoughts. -maria

because it was an american that shot those students and it was here

it should be illegal to own any type of gun, even hunting rifles cuz people would use those to shoot other people too

you shouldnt not care about the 32 people that died at VT just because people are making a big deal out of it
you should care about both causes in the same ways
